El sitio aceptado mayoritariamente se encontraba en el actual territorio de Irak, o sea en la Antigua Mesopotamia., en la parte meridional, a orillas del Golfo Pérsico, aunque se desconoce la extensión máxima que alcanzó. Hay indicios que prueban que ese pudo ser el sitio del primer hogar del hombre. El primitivo nombre dado a la región fue “Edin”.
Documentos antiquísimos desenterrados en las ruinas de ciudades mesopotámicas señalan a Eridú, ciudad culta y próspera de la antigüedad, como “el lugar original del hombre”.
